COMMUNITY-BASED FINANCING FOR ISLAMIC EDUCATION: AN INNOVATIVE PARTICIPATORY MODEL
Main Article Content
Abstract
This literature review examines how community-based financing can strengthen the sustainability of Islamic educational institutions through the alignment of funding instruments, participation, and financial governance. Scholarly studies published during 2020–2026 were reviewed using qualitative thematic analysis. The synthesis identifies three complementary funding channels: Islamic philanthropy (zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and waqf), voluntary community contributions, and income from productive institutional enterprises. It also distinguishes the provision of resources from participation in budgetary decisions and oversight. Cases involving pesantren waqf, income-generating units, and cooperative networks indicate that additional revenue alone is insufficient to ensure continuity. Funding restrictions, unstable cash flows, management capacity, and public accountability shape the value of each channel. The review formulates an integrated management framework that links source identification, participatory priority-setting, accountable expenditure, and periodic evaluation. The framework yields three practical priorities: mapping restricted and flexible funds against educational needs, creating representative budgeting and reporting forums, and developing enterprise or digital financing tools in line with managerial capacity. The contribution is a governance-oriented synthesis that translates diverse financing practices into reviewable decisions for Islamic educational institutions.
