JEMPI requires submitted manuscripts to demonstrate originality and proper attribution. Manuscripts may be screened using similarity-detection software and editorial assessment before or during the review process.

Similarity Screening

As an internal screening guide, JEMPI generally expects an overall similarity level of no more than 20% after legitimate exclusions such as the bibliography and properly quoted material, where applicable. The percentage is not used as the sole basis for acceptance or rejection. Editors assess the source, location, extent, and attribution of matching text.

Practices Not Accepted

  • Copying text, ideas, data, figures, tables, or other intellectual material without appropriate attribution.
  • Mosaic or patchwork plagiarism and close paraphrasing that disguises substantial dependence on another source.
  • Translation plagiarism.
  • Redundant or duplicate publication that materially reproduces previously published work without transparent citation and justification.
  • Misleading manipulation of citations or references.

Editorial Action

When problematic overlap is identified, JEMPI may request clarification or revision, reject the manuscript, or take other appropriate action. If plagiarism or substantial redundant publication is confirmed after publication, the journal may issue a correction, expression of concern, retraction, or other notice appropriate to the case.

A similarity report is an editorial screening tool and, by itself, is not proof of misconduct.
